Linux guru Hans Reiser convicted of first-degree murder

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
A jury has convicted Hans Reiser, developer of the ReiserFS filesystem for Linux, of first degree murder for killing his estranged wife in 2006 even though her body was never found.

Crazy, been following this story all along.. not sure what’s going to happen to ReiserFS now? Namesys are still working on it, but for how long? ReiserFS (also known as Reiser3) is considered “stable and complete” so they have stopped work on it and are now working on Reiser4.. will this ever see the light of day?

The Sword

Came across this band from a review on last month’s Total Guitar magazine - they are definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of early Metallica, Sabbath and CoC, excellent stuff!

Down down deeper and down

My reduction in steroids (Dexamethasone) continues, I am now on 0.5mg a day which is a sixteenth of what I was on in hospital and an eighth of what I was on when I got home. The steroids are to reduce any potential swelling in my head and the gradual reduction is to see if, at any point, I still need them (I certainly hope not, they are doing me some internal damage I think..).

One of the side effects I think I am experiencing is “Stomach upset, increased sensitivity to stomach acid to the point of ulceration of esophagus, stomach, and duodenum” - my stomach is pretty poor, I went to my GP recently and told him and hence my rather thin diet I am on. I have tried a few cups of tea, a bit of chocolate etc and have found that they do affect my stomach rather badly so the diet stays, at least for the time being… I’m hoping that when I go back to seee my GP in a week or so he will be able to give me something to ease/cure my stomach’s sensitivity :)

Brain ache

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

My God I have a savage headache today :( Hopefully it’s a combination of me coming down gradually off the steroids and also I am getting quite dehydrated so that can have consequnces for headaches too.

I am finding it difficult to drink much a the moment, my stomach is quite inflamed so I have been put on a tight “diet” whih means no tea, coffee, milk, fatty foods, chocolate etc.. I’m having dry-ish toast for breakfast and having lightly flavoured water to drink throughout the day and a diner that’s not too spicy or fatty (which we rarely have anyway).

Two weeks I have to do this, then go back to my GP and see how it’s going - I have a suspicion I may have a ulcer thanks to the long-term painkillers and steroids I have been on.. something the GP should be able to advise on after we see how my diet helps :)

Milestones Museum

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

We took Sam to Milestones yesterday, it’s billed as “Imagine an open-air museum inside a massive modern building… a network of streets with shops, a village green and even a pub… dating from Victorian times and the 1930s… it’s fun… a surprise around every corner!”.. we all loved it, it was a wicked laugh. More photos to come when I work out how best to upload them to my Flickr account from Linux, at the moment it’s a manual upload to my web server :(

Us dressed up in some period costumes:

More to come later :)

Snow!

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

The first (and probably only) snow of the year in Basingstoke:

Sam and Hayley have taken a walk over to her parent’s house but I am soooo cold I’m staying in for a bit :P God I must be getting old, I would have been out like a shot a few years ago! Damn my ill health bringing my core temp down :(
