Linux guru Hans Reiser convicted of first-degree murder

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008
A jury has convicted Hans Reiser, developer of the ReiserFS filesystem for Linux, of first degree murder for killing his estranged wife in 2006 even though her body was never found.
The Reg link..

Crazy, been following this story all along.. not sure what’s going to happen to ReiserFS now? Namesys are still working on it, but for how long? ReiserFS (also known as Reiser3) is considered “stable and complete” so they have stopped work on it and are now working on Reiser4.. will this ever see the light of day?

“Hyper-V Leaves Linux Out In The Cold”

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Microsoft said Hyper-V beta for Windows Server 2008 is feature complete. Included in the list of operating systems supported are Windows Server 2003 SP2, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1, Windows Vista SP1 (x86), and Windows XP SP3 (x86)

How the hell can they release  this and not support Red Hat, CentOS or even Solaris? They are trying to force you down a MS one way street - we run ESX at work, I think with a mixture of 2003 Server/Red Hat and Solaris VMs and there is no way in hell I could see we’d even consider switching, Hyper-V has missed the boat big time it seems :/

Installing a linux guest under WSv/Viridian/Hyper-V

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Call it what you will (apparently Hyper-V now) but you *can* install linux as a guest with a couple of simple steps.

Install using a text-based install and with adding “noapic” to your boot line (no quotes), then you should get a bootable install.

After rebooting the finished install, add “noapic” and “vga=788″to the relevant grubline and you are set. (you do this by editing the grub line when booting, press e and add noapic and vga=788 to the “kernel” line again by pressing e). Press enter to save changes and then b to boot.)

Old laptop and linux

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Last Sunday I bought an old T23 Thinkpad to use for some basic web surfing.. we’ve been using my work T43 and it’s not enough for just one person (despite having the main pc upstairs :/) so I thought I’d cough up £60 for a 2nd hand old laptop.

P1.13GHz, 256MB ram (another 256 on order) etc so it’s not that bad - thing is, XP runs okay and recognises the wlreless card but Linux does not. “XP it is then,” you say but it’s just too much of a dog - Fedora 7 failed badly so I’m downloading Xubuntu as we speak to try it out. With the Resitrcted Driver thing going on it should work - I have a large number of Bookmarked pages from the ubuntuforums.org site ready at my disposal so it should work.

In theort as it’s XFCE based it should be nice and quick, especially when the extra 256MB ram comes in!

Friday..

I have an appointment this Friday at 12 noon with Dr Simmons (Oncologist), hopefully (well maybe) I will get some answers pertaining to my future and length of time left etc. I know they aren’t able to see into the future but I am assuming they have seen other people in similar situations so they can maybe advise me on roughly how long I have left, what to expect etc..

what I’m doing now..

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

I was supposed to be going into work for a Developer meeting but it’s been postponed until Monday.. so I’m taking the time now to try to get my aged webcam set up under Linux so I can chat to my Dad/various people without having to use MSN and Vista.

GAIM-vv seems to be the way forawrd, I’l ltry it and see how it goes.

Currently sat in the study supping on a cup of tea (do you know I haven’t had a cup of coffee for over seven weeks!) and listening to some quality Bodom lml :)
